Finding Great Vacation Deals Is Getting Tougher, But It's Still Possible
BOSTON (CBS) - It's time to get ready for that summer vacation. Many travelers are looking for ways to have fun without spending a fortune.
Fuel prices are up, but that doesn't seem to keep vacationers from hitting the road or taking to the skies.
A recent survey found 59% of Americans say they are still planning to travel, and that's 8% more than last year.
Unfortunately, finding a deal might be a little harder.
"You're not going to see a lot of bargain airfares this summer," said CBS Travel Editor Peter Greenberg. "You'll see some spurt airfares we call flash sales. People are alerted on Twitter or Facebook."

Greenberg said that approach is becoming more popular. He also suggests a change in the way to search for cheap airfares on line. "Too many people sign up for fare alerts based on the city they want to go to. Don't do that. Base the fare alerts based on the city you live in. All of a sudden, you'll find out great fare deals for places you hadn't thought about going."
Another way to save is by avoiding costly hotel rooms. Instead, rent an apartment for a short time. There are web sites like AirBnB which help travelers find a place. Another option is to using a swapping website to help trade places with someone else.
Greenberg said, "It accomplishes things. It's cheaper. You get to meet new people and immerse yourself as a local which is really great, and third, you're not eating out every night. You're cooking in the apartment."
