Fenway Park Begins Transformation Into A Football Field

BOSTON (CBS) -- Fenway Park usually looks a little different over the offseason, but normally it's a hockey rink that takes over the storied ballpark.

That will come, but first, Fenway is transforming into a football field.

That transformation got underway Friday, as the grounds crew prepares for next Saturday's Boston College-Notre Dame showdown at the famous ballyard. It will be the first football game at Fenway since 1968.

If you're wondering why the end zones say "Notre Dame" and "Fighting Irish," it's because next week's tilt is a home game for the Irish. The game is part of Notre Dame's "Shamrock Series," in which the Fighting Irish play one off-site game each year. They have played in Yankee Stadium in New York City, the Alamodome in San Antonio, as well as three NFL stadiums (Washington, Dallas, Chicago).

Next weekend won't be the only time the Eagles and Irish battle at Fenway this winter, as their hockey teams will also square off on January 4.

But before turning into a hockey rink, Fenway will host a pair of high school football games the night before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving day.
