Felger: Problem With NBA Games Is Pace, Not Length

BOSTON (CBS) - Give new NBA commissioner Adam Silver credit. He's certainly not short on ideas.

He's considering a midseason tournament (like they do in soccer), has thought about adding a four-point line, sponsors on jerseys, a team in Las Vegas, raising the age limit and much more.

The NBA's latest idea has gotten the attention of 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Massarotti program.

This Sunday's Celtics-Nets game (which you can listen to right here on 98.5FM starting at 3pm!) is being used as an experiment. One minute will be taken away from each quarter, shortening the game to 44 minutes. In addition to 11-minute quarters, the exhibition contest will have only two mandatory timeouts in the second and fourth quarters, down from three in a typical game.

Mike Felger appreciates the effort, but it's not the length of games that's the problem - it's the pace.

Too many timeouts, too many free throws and the last two minutes of a game can be a real headache.

Felger asserts the NBA should be looking to fix that, not the overall length of the game. Tony Massarotti wonders why Major League Baseball -- the sport that needs pace of play addressed the most -- is so far behind on this issue.
