Felger: More Pressure On Danny Ainge From Fans Wouldn't Hurt The Celtics
BOSTON (CBS) - On Thursday afternoon just hours before the NBA Draft, 98.5 The Sports Hub's Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti went through and assessed Danny Ainge's resume, and discussed whether or not Celtics fans should be as content as they are with their president of basketball operations.
Currently the owners of the 16th and 28th pick in the first round, Danny Ainge told reporters earlier this week that his Celtics are trying to trade into the top 10. And according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, if Duke big man Jahlil Okafor somehow drops to No. 3 the Celtics will offer the 76ers a "motherload" to land the center.
Now that is the type of deal Mike Felger is looking for the C's to do, because he believes there should be a greater sense of urgency down there on Causeway Street.
"They should be a little more impatient. Celtics fans should be a little more impatient than you are," Felger said. "You're a little too patient and a little too forgiving of Danny Ainge's track record and this team's track record. You're a little too forgiving."
He added, "Being a Celtics fan is different than any team in town. It's kind of cute. I find it endearing that Kelly Olynyk can come into the league, do an up-an-under once as a rookie and then your color [analyst] says he has more skill than Dirk Nowitzki. And you buy it! That's cute. There's no other team like that in town where that happens. In the case of Danny Ainge and this team, there should be a little more pressure to be more than they are."
Felger makes the point that in Danny Ainge's 12 years the Celtics have really only been contending for a championship three times.
"Twelve years. One title. And in [seven] of the 12 years you've been one-and-done or out of the playoffs. Would you have taken that in 2003 if I said that was what Danny Ainge was going to bring you?" Felger asked.
For Tony Massarotti, the big number that sticks out to him is one -- one title. Mazz is still peeved the C's weren't able to win another title.
"The one title bugs me. They should have won another title with Kevin Garnett. They should have," added Mazz, who went on to blame the Kendrick Perkins trade (facilitated by Ainge) as a reason for no second championship.
"I'm not saying you got to fire him, but how does he get this exalted status with that track record?" Felger wondered. "A little more pressure on the team wouldn't hurt."
