Felger & Mazz: There's Something Fishy About Jake Peavy's Finger Cutting Accident
BOSTON (CBS) - Red Sox starter Jake Peavy missed his first scheduled spring training start on Monday after he cut his left index finger last weekend.
Peavy explained to reporters on Monday that he jabbed himself while cutting the wire tie off the new equipment he had just purchased while taking his children fishing.
Thankfully it was on his non-pitching hand, but he did have to undergo a procedure following the accident to assure there would be no infection.
However the injury is more serious than previously thought, as Ian Browne of MLB.com reports, "It is still too early to know if Peavy will return in time for the start of the regular season."
"This doesn't sound good," said Marc Bertrand Thursday afternoon.
"What happened between the time you cut your finger and when you finally got someone to look at it? Even if you continued fishing, how long do you fish for? Do you fish for 24 hours? Or do you fish for a couple hours, wrap it up and say, 'Maybe I should get this checked out.' That should have been his initial reaction, I mean you are a professional athlete. What really happened with this story?
"I'm not convinced it was just some weird fishing accident," Beetle added.
Tony Massarotti said, "When I heard him tell the story I just thought it was excruciating detail for what should be a simple explanation."
Michael Felger and Tony Mazz say everything ISN'T so awesome down in Fort Myers, and this incident is just further proof.
Defensively, Will Middlebrooks and Xander Bogaerts have been booting balls left and right, which drew the public criticism of manager John Farrell.
Tony called the move "a little Bobby Valentine-ish" based on the comments and Farrell's favoritism for free agent Stephen Drew.
So there's that.
Plus, Shane Victorino hasn't played yet, Chris Capuano got shelled in his first outing and they haven't played well out of the gate in spring training.
"Last year the whole vibe was different," said Mazz.
"They looked good from day one in spring training," said Felger.
"Absolutely they did. It just feels to me like some of that edge, and focus and intensity that really drove them last year, it just feels like some of that is already gone. But they won the World Series, so that's natural. But they're 1-5 and they clearly have not played well. It's not a great start to spring training. That's all I'm saying," Mazz concluded.
