Felger & Mazz: Seahawks Achilles Heel Is Lack Of Discipline
BOSTON (CBS) - It was a showdown of the NFC's best yesterday on Monday Night Football, a primetime game between the Seattle Seahawks at home against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.
Quite frankly, it wasn't much of a game.
The Seahawks dominated the contest from start to finish and upended the NFC South-leading Saints 34-7 in front of their home crowd. Pete Carroll's team asserted itself as the premier team in the conference and one of the NFL's best.
Former Patriots tight end and Sports Hub host Jermaine Wiggins was an in-studio guest of the Felger & Massarotti program on Tuesday and provided what he thinks is the Achilles heel of the Seahawks, that is lack of discipline.
"I think they are so undisciplined, and ultimately that's going to catch up to them," said Wiggy. "Dumb penalties, if you just look at them throughout the game that's how they play."
"Do they play with that same type of attitude when they're on the road? It's one thing to be the big, bad bully when you're at home, but it's another thing to do that on the road. I think that's another thing that could bite them in the butt."
The Seahawks are one of the NFL's most penalized teams, and Tony Massarotti points that lack of discipline back to head coach Pete Carroll.
"Lack of discipline and coaching are sort of the same thing," said Mazz. "They turn the ball over a lot and penalties...that's coaching to me. That's sloppy, it's a little sloppy."
Another doubt in the back of Mike Felger's mind is capacity of Pete Carroll, a sort of "rah-rah" college coach enjoying success in the NFL. Lack of discipline was Carroll's undoing during his tenure here in New England, and Felger thinks it could manifest again with this Seattle team.
Felger also questions Seattle's homefield advantage and whether or not teams like that ever win.
"Seattle has such a massive homefield advantage and I'm just sort of naturally distrustful of those sort of teams," said Felger.
"Usually I save that distrust for the dome teams or a team like Miami...the noise in Seattle's building is so dramatic and there's just something I don't trust when you're that good at home. Does it really travel?"
