Felger & Mazz: Patriots Start Season Against Untested QBs
Felger and Massarotti kicked off the week discussing tonight's second New England Patriots preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and also take a look around the NFL.
Last season, the Patriots defense got lucky most weeks, facing less-than-stellar quarterbacks. That won't change to start the 2012 season. In Week 1, the Patriots will face second-year quarterback Jake Locker in what will be his first career start.
How favorable are the quarterback matchups for the Pats to start this season?
"They don't have to be great in a lot of these games, they just don't have to suck because the other team is going to be so far behind with their quarterback play," said Mazz. "The one thing it has really afforded them, shouldn't it really give more time to the defense; make mistakes and not necessarily get burned by them."
"The next time you're going to see a real quarterback on the field, in a game that matters, is when? Jake Locker in Week 1 in his first career start? Week 2 in Arizona with John Skelton?" questioned Felger. "Think of the quarterbacks they're playing! It doesn't end."
"Week 3 is at Baltimore -- certainly a tough team and a tough place to play -- but I think Joe Flacco blows. Then Week 4 it's at Buffalo with Ryan Fitzpatrick," continued Felger. "And finally in Week 5 you have Denver and Peyton Manning, who by the way, doesn't look all that hot so far. But at least that's obviously going to be a real quarterback."
Both expect the Eagles to let Michael Vick see the field quite a bit tonight, giving the Patriots a second-straight good QB matchup to work with.
Moving around the NFL, how impressed have Felger & Mazz been with Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck this preseason? And on the flip side, how about that Jets offense?
Finally, how will the NFL fix the current referee situation? Is it as comical as the replacement refs themselves? Felger & Mazz break it down!
