Felger & Mazz On: Cliff Lee
Cliff Lee has been sensational so far in the playoffs, and with his impending free agent status the guys debate if the Red Sox will be able to sign him. Also, Mazz brings up some shocking stats that compare Lee to one of the best pitchers of all time.
Felger: "I mean you're looking at a $20 million guy. I know the numbers have come down, but look at the way he is playing. His curveball is ridiculous. This guy is out of his mind in a good way. Obviously, he has the makeup. If I'm the Red Sox, I let Lackey and Beckett bounce back next year, but I deal Matsuzaka – while there is still some return. I still believe the rotation is the least of their worries. I think they will look into it, but this is unrealistic – especially if the Yankees target this one guy."
Mazz: "If you could clear room for him in the rotation, don't you have to do it? You have to look at him as a possible replacement for Matsuzaka, Beckett, or John Lackey. I think the Yankees are probably going to spend whatever they have to spend to get him. He was absolutely filthy last night. He was pretty good for the last 4 innings – and great for the last five. To me, there's all the reason in the world to look into him. Sandy Koufax made seven career post-season starts, and he was 4-3. Cliff Lee has made seven career post-season starts, and he is 6-0, undefeated in the playoffs. Were seeing a guy who is turning in post season's games for the ages."
