Felger & Mazz: New York Media Treating Derek Jeter Like A Sacred Cow
BOSTON (CBS) - 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Massarotti program has a number of different rules that they abide by -- commandments, if you will.
The cap is crap. No pleasantries. Take it out on the show. There are others, but above all else: No sacred cows, meaning, nobody is beyond reproach. Not Tom Brady, not David Ortiz. Nobody.
Nobody is free from criticism. Not even Derek Jeter, although you'd never know it listening to the Yankee games on the radio, or watching on the YES Network.
Jeter has never been Ozzie Smith, but his defense at shortstop has been glaringly awful in 2014 by his inability to reach routine ground balls. One play in particular against the Orioles where he couldn't been down far enough on a double play ball led to a big scoring inning for the O's in a 14-5 rout.
"They [New York media] don't know what to do down there. Between [John] Sterling, [Suzyn] Waldman, [Ken] Singleton, [Michael] Kay -- they all know it. But Jeter is the franchise," said Mazz.
"Sacred cowism," added Felger.
"It's the same thing with Tom Brady. His play has slipped a little and if you can't acknowledge that there's something wrong with you. Jeter? His play has slipped a lot, and they're all biting their tongues down there. They don't know what to do and what to say because it is glaring," said Mazz.
"Sacred cowism is definitely going on there with Jeter," said Felger.
"I'm eager to see how this thing plays out down there, because if it stays like that they can't play him at shortstop. No way," concluded Mazz.
