Felger & Mazz: Has Keeping Players For Their Whole Career Become A Thing Of The Past?
Paul Pierce had played all 15 years of his NBA career with the Boston Celtics, but next season he'll be in a Brooklyn Nets uniform.
On Thursday Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry were introduced by their new team at the Barclay's Center in New York, leading Felger & Mazz into an interesting conversation about players ending their careers having only played for one team.
Are you upset that the Celtics didn't keep Pierce around to be a lifelong Celtic?
Mazz wasn't surprised that the team traded their veteran captain.
"What were the alternatives for them? Trade Pierce or buy him out. They weren't going to bring him back at that number. For them to get anything for Pierce is a borderline miracle," he said. "I think we were all conceding the fact that Pierce, in all probability, wasn't going to play next season for them anyway, and if he did he was going to be gone at the trade deadline."
Would you have traded Larry Bird in 1992 knowing that the team wasn't going to win a championship that season? What if Tom Brady finished his career with another team? How would you feel about that?
