Felger & Mazz: Cam Neely Discusses Strengths, Weaknesses, Approaching Trade Deadline
Boston Bruins president Cam Neely joined Marc Bertrand and Bob Beers to talk about the differences playing out in the shortened season, the B's low scoring totals through 13 games, the NHL trade deadline, Chris Bourque, and possible league realignment.
Neely said that for him, managing this shortened season isn't much different than normal, but the team can't afford to go through any prolonged slumps.
"From an on-ice standpoint, you don't really have the luxury of maybe not playing as well as you'd like and having an opportunity to make those points up, especially from a different conference. So in that regard, that's the biggest difference," Neely said.
The Bruins have a great record at 9-2-2, but the team ranks 20th in goals scored. Neely said that because the players are generating scoring chances, he's not greatly concerned about the low goal total thus far.
"We're certainly getting chances. I think everybody can see that for the most part," Neely said. "Most of the games we're playing, we're getting good scoring opportunities, and for whatever reason, we're not burying them. ... I think the guys that haven't really been scoring as much as we maybe expected or would like, I think they're still getting some chances."
Neely spent a decade as Ray Bourque's teammate in Boston, and Bourque's son is coming off his best game in a Bruins jersey. Neely said that's the type of game that Chris Bourque will need to play in order to be at his best.
"It's hard to say," Neely said of Bourque's potential. "We know what he's done in the AHL and he's put up great numbers. ... He stepped up to the challenge and I give him credit for that. We're just looking for him to play the way he played that game. We feel like he can contribute."
