Felger & Mazz: Bruins Not Good At Shootout, That's Why They Hate It
BOSTON (CBS) - Everybody hates losing, but absolutely everybody hates losing in the shootout.
The Bruins fell to the St. Louis Blues at the TD Garden last night 3-2 after failing to outscore the Blues in the shootout period following a scoreless third period and overtime.
Tuukka Rask flipped out on the ice after giving up the game-winner, and railed after the game that the NHL needs to get rid of the shootouts immediately, calling for the league to "gas them right away."
Kalman: With Rask Leading Charge, Time For NHL To Ditch Shootouts
Rask isn't the only Bruin to complain about the shootout.
Bruins President Cam Neely is a regular guest on the Felger & Massarotti program, and he told us last week, "I've never really liked the shootout. I don't like that that's how you decide a team sport."
The team's leading scorer Milan Lucic is also in favor of ditching the shootout.
Michael Felger is seemingly one of the only supporters of the overtime shootout, and he came to the realization today why the Bruins hate it so much.
Because they're not good at it, and Felger feels like it has more to do with the coach than the goalie.
"The coach [Claude Julien] throws out a checker in Chris Kelly when you get to the sudden death shootouts. Was Tuukka mad at himself last night when he tried to break his stick? No, I think he's mad at the fact that the Fribble Crew [fourth line] goes out there to try and win the shootout and can't score in it."
"That's why Tuukka's aggravated," concluded Felger.
Tony Massarotti agrees, but thinks it has more to do with Tuukka - and he's got the stats to back it up.
"I think he's mad at it because he sucks at it, he's just not that kind of goalie," said Mazz. "Eleven shots on him in the shootout this year and he's given up four goals, so the save percentage ranks 28th in the league."
"In terms of pure save percentage in the shootout he is 28th in the league. And what is he the rest of the time? Second? To me, he's your classic game goalie."
