Felger & Mazz: Bobby Valentine's Expectations
With both Felger and Masssarotti on vacation, Marc "The Beetle" Bertrand and Damon Amendolara are in the hosts chairs today, talking some Boston Red Sox and Bobby Valentine.
Is Bertrand's recent fascination with Bobby Valentine all in hopes that it blows up in the Sox face? Is Bobby Valentine trying too hard to be popular?
"Bobby Valentine is a politician. He is 'Mayor Valentine,' he is 'Senator Valentine.' He spent the entire offseason caravaning around New England kissing babies and shaking hands," said DA. "He's just trying to be a popular figure so he gives himself some leash. When you're trying to play the popularity contest, I don't trust you."
Bertrand feels a lot better about Valentine, especially with his approach in his first week of Red Sox Spring Training.
"This is a guy who likes to set a lot of rules and makes everyone go to the beat of his drum," said Bertrand. "He wants everyone to follow his lead, and for a team that desperately needs some sort of leadership, he might be able to supply a small piece of that."
If Valentine wanted to get back into managing in the majors, why did he chose the Red Sox? Was he just looking to manage a good team in a big market?
"He was desperate to manage a good team again," said Bertrand. "He was desperate to manage a team with talent and a team he could win with in the short-term, as opposed to getting on board with a building project or a team that was far away."
Does Bobby Valentine lack discipline?
