FBI Agent Details Whitey Bulger's Arrest In '60 Minutes' Interview

BOSTON (CBS) - The FBI agent who finally captured James "Whitey" Bulger in June 2011 shares some new details about the arrest with "60 Minutes" this Sunday.

Los Angeles FBI agent Scott Garriola says he asked Bulger, "Hey, Whitey, aren't you relieved that you don't have to look over your shoulder anymore and, you know, it's-- it's come to an end? And he said, 'Are you f------ nuts?'"

Garriola also describes finding Bulger's lengthy manuscript hidden in the Santa Monica hideout he shared with fellow fugitive Catherine Greig.

"I told him I found the manuscript in there," Garriola explains. "And he looked at Catherine and said, 'Did I name names in that?' And she says, 'Oh, I don't think you did.' And I asked him, I said, 'Well, whose name are you worried about?' He said, 'Oh, there was some guy in a murder. I don't wanna rat him out.' And that's all he would say."

Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's office intended on using that manuscript in court this summer during Bulger's federal trial.
"We were, quite frankly, saving it for cross-examination of him," lead prosecutor Fred Wyshak told WBZ. "Unfortunately, he never testified so we never got to use it."

Wyshak says some of the manuscript could certainly be described as incriminating.

"It does contain certain statements by Bulger about some of the criminal activity that he was charged with in the indictment," he said.

Whitey's apartment contained a lot that interested agents along with things that confused them. FBI agents took special interest in Bulger's collection of 64-ounce bottles, over the tops of which were stretched white socks.

Agent Garriola tells the story:

"I said, 'Hey Whitey, what are these? Are these some kind of Molotov cocktail you're making?' He goes, 'No,' he said, 'I buy-- tube socks from the 99 Cents Store and-- they're too tight on my calves and that's the way I stretch 'em out.' I said, 'Why you shopping at the 99 Cents Store? You have half a million dollars under your bed.' He goes, 'I had to make the money last.'"

You can watch the entire interview on 60 Minutes Sunday at 7 p.m. on WBZ-TV.
