Fatal Shooting Of Armed Somerville Man Justified
SOMERVILLE (AP) - Somerville police officers and federal ATF agents will not face any charges for shooting and killing a 21-year-old man after he opened fire on officers trying to arrest him on gun trafficking charges.
The Middlesex district attorney's office said on Friday that Matthew Krister of Somerville bought eight handguns in New Hampshire in ten days and sold six firearms to gang members last October.
As authorities investigated the case, Krister told an ex-girlfriend that he would get into a shootout with police
officers if they came looking for him.
In November, Krister shot Somerville detective Mario Oliveira five times as police and federal ATF agents went to arrest him. Officers returned fire, fatally hitting the suspect seven times.
Prosecutors say killing Krister was justifiable to protect lives, bring the incident under control and affect lawful
objectives.
