Farmers' Almanac Predicts A 'Soggy Spring'
BOSTON (CBS) – Spring officially began at 7:02 a.m. Wednesday, but no one's really sure when the warmer weather will actually arrive in southern New England.
So what can we expect this spring?
The Farmers' Almanac, which accurately predicted quite a few storms for the region this winter, is calling for a "pretty soggy spring."
"We do talk about the 28th through the 31st (of March) being another coastal storm. More wind, rain and snow just in time for Easter," Pete Geiger, editor of the Farmers' Almanac, told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Wednesday.
"When you get past the month of March, we talk about quite a bit of rain, even for Patriots' Day, we say that rain's going to coincide with the Patriots' Day events (Boston Marathon, Red Sox game at Fenway Park) and it will just be a wet spring, which is not the worst thing in the world, because we're also talking about a very warm and drier than normal summer."
Geiger said they put together the seasonal forecast two years in advance, using sunspot activity, planet positions, the effect that the moon has on the earth and a mathematical formula that was developed back in the early 1800's.
He was very pleased with the accuracy of the winter forecast.
"It surprised me. The month of December I had more snow in mind than we had, but once we got into January, it just took off and it pretty much was on track with what we talked about."
