Family Of Woman Hit And Killed By Bus Wants Driver Charged
WORCESTER (CBS) - Jessica Spinola's family says if the bus driver who hit her had been paying better attention, she might be alive today. They say her two-year-old son might not be asking where's his "mummy."
Police say the 20-year-old had just gotten out of a car that was pulled alongside the intersection of Cambridge and Southbridge Streets Friday. She stepped into a crosswalk, when the light turned green, and a bus hit and killed her. The 62-year-old behind the wheel said she did not see Spinola. Police are still investigating, but so far, that driver is not facing any charges.
"I don't understand why this lady did not see my daughter. She had on bright bright pink pants," says her Mother, Theresa Spinola. "I stop for all pedestrians. I don't care if you're in a crosswalk or not. They have the right of way. Whether you like it or not, that's the way it goes."
The victim's sister says she's concerned the crosswalk signals don't give pedestrians enough time before they change. "I think they need to fix that crossing sign," says Carmen Ilarraza. " It needs to be a lot longer."
Spinola leaves behind her parents, two sisters, and a 23-month-old baby boy.
