Classmate: Teen Told School Nurse He Didn't Want To Swim Prior To Drowning Death
TYNGSBOROUGH (CBS/AP) – Family members have identified the 15-year-old boy who drowned at Greater Lowell Technical High School on Tuesday.
Classmate Sonya Lugo told WBZ-TV, Danny Svay was in the school nurse's office prior to his death and said he didn't want to swim.
The father of Svay says the freshman wanted to join the military and was excited to get his driver's permit.
"I can't believe it happened," Bunthoen Svay told WBZ. "I just want him back. That's it. That's all I want."
A preliminary investigation indicates the teen's death is accidental, authorities said.
Tyngsborough Deputy Police Chief Richard Howe said emergency workers were dispatched to the school at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday after Svay was found unconscious in the swimming pool.
Howe said officers and firefighters performed CPR, but the boy was pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital.
A notice to teachers and students asked them to refrain from texting and tweeting about the incident until more facts were known.
Still, a wave of messages flooded social media, many of them inspired by Danny's own post.
The night before he died, Danny updated his Facebook status to read, "L.I.F.E- Live It Fully Everyday J."
Soon after his death, students were tweeting and sharing that message hundreds of times.
Greater Lowell Tech is one of the biggest technical schools in the country, with two dozen technical programs.
