Families Take Precautions After EEE Is Found On Cape Cod
BREWSTER (CBS) - Campers at the popular Nickerson State Park are taking precautions after a mosquito tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis. It's the first time a human-biting mosquito was found to have EEE on the Cape.
Families are using insect repellent and mosquito netting to protect themselves.
"We're quite concerned," said Lori Pay who is vacationing at the park with her husband and three young children.
Park Rangers went to each campsite informing everyone about the finding. They also provided tips for staying safe. Campers are being urged to stay inside at night.
The Layne Family from Dedham is diligent about using repellent and also has netting tent set up around their picnic table.
"For the most part, not many mosquitoes here," said one camper. "We did go in the tents a little early last night rather than staying out."
Officials with The Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project tell WBZ, fortunately it's been a dry season and there are not many mosquitoes in the park. Also, the type that tested positive is on the decline because it's nearing the end of the life cycle.
More traps have been set up, and another batch is currently being tested for EEE. If positive, the Control Project may consider ground spraying of insecticide.
