4 hurt in fire that rips through shops, apartments on Main Street in Falmouth
FALMOUTH - Four people, including a firefighter, were hurt in a fire that tore through shops and apartments on Main Street in Falmouth on New Year's Day.
The fire started around 5 p.m. Monday. All the injuries are said to be minor.
"We had a fire that was not only coming out the front of the building, but we had several apartments that also had fire running through them to the rear of the building and we had concerns that attic was going to be involved as well," said Falmouth Fire Chief Timothy Smith. "Everything's pretty quiet here. Fortunately there was not a lot of activity on Main Street."
The stores were closed at the time, but five businesses ended up with significant water damage.
Patrons were eating at The Quarterdeck seafood restaurant next door when the flames broke out. Employees are spending Tuesday cleaning up half-eaten plates of food as customers had to suddenly rush out during the fire.
Owner Bob Garvis said the restaurant is still without power.
"I'm guessing it was electrical because that's what we smelled from the beginning then we smelled strong order of smoke and then we saw major flames coming out on Main Street," Garvis said.
There's no word yet on how or where the fire started. An inspector will be at the site Tuesday to determine the future of the historic building.
