Fallen Veterans Honored At Norfolk Ceremony
NORFOLK (CBS) - A somber ceremony was held in Norfolk where residents gathered to honor veterans who died serving our country.
The Lions Clubs hosted a ceremony on Saturday at Town Hill which is lined with 1,000 American flags. It included a special salute to the flags and a poem.
Gold Star mother Nancy Smith was honored during the ceremony. She lost her son, Adam Kennedy, in the Iraq war in 2007.
"It's a hard weekend for us," she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe. "To have him acknowledged, it's a wonderful support from the community.
Selectmen chairman Jim Lehan told the crowd that it is important to remember why those flags are there.
"Much like the crosses in the United States Cemetery in Normandy, this field of flags is symbolic of the lives given freely in defending the liberties we all enjoy today," he said. "We all know these freedoms we all enjoy and cherish are not free. They are earned.
"They are earned through the actions of our citizens and defended by the actions of our armed forces."
People bought the flags for $10 apiece to honor the memory of a veteran as part of a fundraiser to benefit The Fisher House Boston, a nonprofit charity that provides a home away from home for families of veterans who are receiving treatment at the VA Boston Healthcare System in West Roxbury.
The flags will be on display through May 31.
