Ex-Councilor Turner Faces Sentencing In Bribe Case
BOSTON (AP) - Former Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner faces sentencing this week on federal corruption charges.
He was convicted in October of taking a $1,000 bribe and then lying about it to FBI agents.
During the trial, prosecutors said Turner accepted a wad of cash in 2007 during a handshake with a businessman who was seeking help in getting a liquor license and was cooperating with the FBI. Turner insisted that he did not take a bribe.
Turner was expelled from the council last month, but has been challenging the ouster in court.
He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years on an attempted extortion charge and five years for each of three counts of making false statements to federal agents. Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday in federal court.
