Email Scam Threatens Murder-For-Hire

BOSTON (CBS) - The Better Business Bureau is alerting the public to the resurgence of a disturbing email scam.

The message claims to come from a professional assassin and the subject line reads, "Someone paid us to kill you." The message goes on to say that someone you consider a friend has hired the email writer to kill you, but you can save your own life by paying $3,800.

Nancy Cahalen, president of Central New England's Better Business Bureau says the scam first cropped up about three years ago. The only way to stop it, she said, is for recipients to stop responding.

"Once they respond to the scammer, they're either going to look for money; they're going to look for information about your bank account. That's all they want to do," Cahalen said.

People who receive the email are advised not to respond and to contact the authorities. The FBI's internet crime complain center can be reached online at ic3.gov.
