Ed Reed Signs With New York Jets
BOSTON (CBS) -- Ed Reed officially became a free agent on Wednesday at 4 p.m., and it didn't take very long for the future Hall of Fame safety to find a new team.
Reed signed with the New York Jets on Thursday morning, the team tweeted.
"We bolstered our secondary THURS, agreeing to terms with Ed Reed a day after the veteran S cleared waivers," the @nyjets Twitter account said. "Ed Reed is expected to be on the practice field today with the Jets."
Reed, 35, spent the first 11 years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, winning the Super Bowl last year before becoming a free agent. He signed with the Houston Texans but did not get much playing time, eventually getting released following last weekend's loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Reed has 16 tackles and no interceptions in seven games this season.
He cleared waivers on Wednesday, meaning no team was willing to take on his existing contract, thereby allowing him to sign with whatever team that presented the best offer to him.
Many teams were rumored to be in (and out) of the push to sign Reed, but the Jets ended up winning the player in the end.
The Jets are 5-4 on the season, currently sitting in the final playoff spot in the AFC. In their remaining six games, they'll face just one team (Carolina) with a winning record, as their six opponents have a combined record of 24-31. The Jets are focused on making the playoffs, and they're hoping the addition of Reed helps them get there.
