Brandon Merritt, 19, is accused of using fictitious gift card accounts to buy the Kindles on Amazon.com.
Police said Merritt had them shipped to vacant homes in town, where he would pick them up.
Detectives set up surveillance at one house, and arrested Merritt last week when he came to get one of the e-readers.
So far, eight Kindles have been recovered.
Merritt pleaded not guilty to larceny charges and was released. He was ordered to come back to court next month.
Police added that there may be more arrests.
