2 Dead, 1 Seriously Hurt In Head-On Crash On Route 49 In East Brookfield

EAST BROOKFIELD (CBS) -- Two people are dead and another has serious injuries after a crash in East Brookfield on Monday.

After a Massachusetts State Police reconstruction team spent four hours studying the traumatic scene, police announced a 60-year-old man from Fitchburg behind the wheel of a Nissan Rogue drove into the opposite lane where a 71-year-old man from Leicester was driving a Toyota Tacoma. Both men were killed in the head-on crash on busy Route 49.

It's a scene neighbors say they know all too well. "People speeding. It's crazy. They cut down a lot of the passing zones, because people just don't look and pay attention," said neighbor Michelle Holmes. "I know they've increased police coverage around here," she said.

Police say a 28-year-old passenger, a man who was in the truck, was pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital. Police could be heard calling for extra "jaws", equipment used to extricate survivors.

In the midst of the chaos, an animal control officer also responded, where witnesses said a pet was also among the casualties.
