Duxbury Increases Shark Watch; Advises Swimming Cautiously At Your Own Risk
DUXBURY (CBS) – One day after a 15-foot great white shark was spotted about 150 yards off Duxbury Beach, the Duxbury harbormaster is advising beachgoers they may go back in the water – at their own risk.
The harbormaster reported Tuesday morning that there have been no further sightings of the shark since it was spotted Monday afternoon about 2:00 by a state police helicopter.
Swimmers were ordered out of the water while the shark was monitored from the air and by boat as it swam away to the south.
Shortly before 4:00 Monday afternoon the beach was reopened to swimmers.
As a result of the shark sighting, town officials have increased police and harbormaster patrols on the beach and in the water.
The harbormaster today advised beachgoers that if they do go in the water "they should do so cautiously and avoid going into the water beyond waist depth."
With the weather perfect for a day at the beach, the draw to the water is a strong one.
Folks arriving at Duxbury Beach Tuesday morning told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens a shark sighting won't keep them out of the water -- even if it was a 15-foot great white.
One woman said she's not worried and suspect's she'll hear the "shark music" (cue the theme from "Jaws") before a shark gets her.
Further information on Duxbury Beach is available on the harbormaster's website or by calling 781-934-2866, extension 5. Updated information on beach restrictions will be on the harbormaster's Twitter feed.
