Christmas Tree Catches Fire Inside Duxbury Home
DUXBURY (CBS) – A resident's quick actions helped prevent significant damage after a Christmas tree caught fire inside a Duxbury home. It happened late Sunday night on Landing Road.
"It was a matter of seconds before half the tree was on fire," said Tod Perry, a father of three. He went to unplug the tree when he noticed something was off.
Jack Perry said, "I pretty much came downstairs because the power went out and I saw my dad repairing the fuse and then I walked into the living room and I see the sparks flying. Then just in an instant, [the tree] went up in flames and I yelled out 'fire! Fire! There's a fire! We've got to get out of here.'"
"It was shooting up like a rocket," Bud Perry explained.
The family said the fire started in the corner next to the tree when sparks came out of an electrical unit. The fire burned the tree and a corner of the home.
Tod was able to put the fire out with an extinguisher and pull the tree outside. No one was hurt.
"We wouldn't have a house if my dad hadn't done anything so I'm happy that it's still here," Charlotte Perry said.
Though their tree was watered, it still went up fast.
Reminders from Duxbury Fire said if it wasn't, this could have been worse.
"If you have a live Christmas tree you want to make sure it's watered most important. You also want to make sure there are no candles around, you want to try and keep it away from any electrical sources or heating sources, things that can obviously spark a fire," Captain Rob Reardon said.
