Woman Injured By Tire In I-95 Crash Released From Hospital

WALTHAM (CBS) -- A Lowell man was in Waltham District Court Monday after two wheels from the truck he was driving dislodged on Interstate 95 North over the weekend and seriously injured another driver.

That driver, 27-year-old Rose DeDominicis of Boston, has been released from the hospital. DeDominicis suffered a concussion and is badly bruised. Her mother, who she is staying with while recovering, told WBZ-TV that it is a miracle she survived.

She said the last thing her daughter remembers is seeing the tire coming toward her car--and nothing else after.

Valdir Dossantos, 48, of Lowell, was arrested for driving without a license Saturday and released on bail on Monday.

Massachusetts State Police said Dossantos was driving a 1999 Ford Super Duty dual-rear wheel truck South on I-95 before Exit 26 around 11:10 a.m. Saturday when, for reasons yet unknown, two right rear wheels came off the truck and struck two vehicles.

One of the wheels bounced over the median and into a northbound lane, striking a 2013 Mazda 3 driven by DeDominicis. DeDominicis was taken to Lahey Clinic with serious injuries. The Mazda sustained heavy damage to the roof and windshield.

The other tire hit a 2008 Toyota Prius, but the driver, a 60-year-old Lunenburg man, and his passenger were not injured.

Two left travel lanes on the northbound side of I-95 were closed for about a half hour.

State Police continue to inspect the truck and more charges are possible. Dossantos will be back in court next month.
