Driver Seriously Burned In Uxbridge Car Crash
UXBRIDGE (CBS) -- A driver suffered critical injuries including burns to 45 percent of his body in a single-car crash on East Hartford Avenue early Sunday morning, the Uxbridge Police said in a prepared statement.
At about 4:10 a.m., the crash was reported to the Uxbridge Police. The first officer to arrive at the crash scene witnessed a 2000 Chevrolet Impala had struck a telephone pole, splitting the pole in half. The car was engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside. Officer Peter Bates and Firefighter Brett Lisak extinguished the fire with the assistance of a Good Samaritan, the police said.
The driver, who sustained critical injuries including burns to 45 percent of his body, was initially treated by Uxbridge firefighters, then a medical helicopter took him UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. The driver was not identified
The Uxbridge Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police, and the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Accident Reconstruction Unit were dispatched to the scene, assisting with the investigation and helping close the road during the emergency response effort.
Investigators suspect speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, the police said.
