Driver Cited For Using Mannequin As Passenger In I-93 HOV Lane
QUINCY (CBS) - A driver was cited on Thursday morning for attempting to drive in the HOV lane with a fake passenger, Massachusetts State Police said.
Trooper John Carnell says he spotted the fake passenger in a vehicle that entered the restricted lane on I-93 Northbound around 6:35 a.m.
During rush hour, the HOV lane is designated for cars with two or more people.
The driver was pulled over, and Trooper Carnell found that the object in the passenger seat was a propped up work jacket with a mannequin head attached to the top of the jacket.
"I was able to take a good look in every vehicle, and this was apparent. The position of the neck didn't seem right," Trooper Carnell said.
The driver, who was not identified, was issued a citation for operating on an excluded way.
This is not the first time that Trooper Carnell has stopped an driver using a fake passenger.
In April of 2013, a woman was pulled over with a full-sized doll in a car seat.
Another driver was cited in 2012.
And three days after the HOV lane opened in 1995, two separate drivers tried to use the trick get into the HOV lane.
