Father Crosses Marathon Finish Line With Son Who Needs Heart Transplant

BOSTON (CBS) - Two-year-old Jack Middlemiss was the youngest to cross the finish line in the 2016 Boston Marathon.

His father Scott was beside him who ran the entire 26.2 mile grueling race. "The first 26 miles were bad yesterday. A lot of aches and pains but the last .2 miles was magical and takes away all the pain," Scott said.

The medal, the race, all comes at an extraordinary cost for the Middlemiss family and their unimaginable struggle. Scott and Kate's oldest son Joseph died in 2013 from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Joe was only 6 years old.

Now their youngest son Jack suffers from the same disease and needs a new heart. "We know Jack has a long road ahead of him and we are trying to raise awareness he is currently listed for a heart transplant," Scott said.

Scott ran the marathon in memory of his son Joseph and for Jack who is fighting for his life. As Scott ran down Boylston Street his wife Kate handed her son over to dad.

"When you see this little boy who will never be able to run a marathon or any competitive races to see him cross the finish symbolizes what he goes through with a smile on his face," Kate said.
