DPH: Drug Overdoses Down Due To Nasal Spray Kits

BOSTON (CBS) ---- State public health officials say the state has reached a milestone in preventing drug overdose deaths.

State officials say 2,000 people have been saved from a drug overdose by the state's Naloxone program, which provides nasal spray kits that block the effects of heroin and other opiates.

Quincy Police Lieutenant Detective Patrick Glynn says it's been successful in his city.

"Even if we've only reversed one person, it would have been successful, but we've been able to reverse 188 and also significantly reduce overdose deaths," Glynn said.

Glynn says while a lot of attention is being given to designer drug "Molly," heroin and other opiates pose a larger problem.

The spray kits are available in 15 cities across the state.
