Dozens Of Sea Turtles Rescued From Cape Cod Beaches
QUINCY (CBS) – A poor sense of direction likely saved the lives of several dozen sea turtles this weekend.
In recent days 45 sea turtles washed ashore beaches on Cape Cod. The young turtles don't yet know how to properly make their migration, and as a result they were stranded.
"They get on the north side of the Cape. Navigation is tricky," New England Aquarium spokesman Tony LaCasse told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey.
"They've got land on three sides and they have to swim north 25 miles to then begin swimming south. And because they're young they don't figure that out often."
LaCasse said turtle rescues from Cape Cod are a regular occurrence this time of year. According to the aquarium's website, each November 25-150 young sea turtles are rescued.
After being rescued, the turtles are brought to the New England Aquarium's "turtle hospital," where they are placed in warming tanks to help get them back to full health.
