Dover, South Duxbury Top List Of Richest Mass. Towns
BOSTON (CBS) - Income levels in six U.S. communities are so high that they are literally off the charts.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the median household income (MHI) is $250,001 in Brookville, Muttontown and Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y.; Chevy Chase Village, Md.; Hidden Hills, Calif.; and Hunters Creek Village, Texas.
The actual figures are probably bigger, but $250,001 is as high as the bureau's American Community Survey goes.
MHI is defined as the annual income of a typical household in a given community, with half of all households earning more and half earning less.
Thirty-four U.S. cities, villages, towns and census-designated places (CDPs) have median household incomes of more than $200,000.
They're included below in a massive database of 14,214 places with populations of 1,000 or more. (CDPs are unincorporated communities that have the characteristics of cities.)
The richest town in Massachusetts, Dover, doesn't come close.
Median household income in the tiny, southwestern suburb of Boston is just over $150,000.
South Duxbury is close behind, with a little more than $147,000 in median household income.
Cordaville (a neighborhood in Southboro), Devens and Wellesley round out the top five.
Dover and South Duxbury also top the list of Massachusetts' richest communities in terms of income concentration.
In both places, about half the population has a household income of $150,000 or more.
Wellesley, Lexington and Boxford are not far behind.

Also included in the database are per capita income (PCI) figures, which reflect the average income per person in a given community.
Lisa van der Pool of the Boston Business Journal reports
Diablo, Calif., posted the highest PCI in the nation, $187,892, followed by North Key Largo, Fla., at $178,676.
The American Community Survey based its latest income estimates on research conducted between 2004 and 2009.
All figures are subject to sampling error, which explains why the PCIs in a handful of communities (including Diablo) are higher than their MHIs.
On Numbers will issue exclusive affluence rankings for all 14,214 communities on Friday.
Twelve factors, including MHI and PCI, will be used to determine the rankings.
