BOSTON (CBS) -- An early morning shooting in Boston left one man dead hours before the annual Father's Day Unity Peace Walk in the city.

"Every time, we get a phone call, and the Commissioner [William Gross] calls me -- I just spoke to him this morning about a homicide last night. It's just we have to do better," said Mayor Marty Walsh at the Unity Walk.

The two-mile march brought city officials and families together to emphasize the importance of father figures to create safer streets.

Two days ago, police responded to a deadly shooting on Devon Street.

"One homicide is too many. One crime is too many," said Police Commissioner William Gross.

He admitted gun violence is a problem but said his officers are doing their best to prevent crime.

"The way we combat that is what we're doing now. Don't forget why we're here to walk. It's not just Father's Day. It's unity," said Gross.

Anyone with information regarding either shooting is asked to call the police.
