Dorchester Neighborhood Upset With City's Snow And Trash Removal
DORCHESTER (CBS) - A long-time resident of Dorchester says she and her neighbors are getting some terrible treatment from the city of Boston.
Annette Scott told WBZ-TV and WBZ NewsRadio 1030 the city's Department of Public Works crews have dumped mountains of snow in her backyard on Lawrence Avenue.
"They just disregarded the fact that somebody lives there and said, 'O.k., I'm going to get rid of this snow and put it in this yard," Scott said. "I feel so violated."
"I have lived in the same house for 50 years, been through a lot of snowstorms, Blizzard of '78. The way this is being handled is absolutely ridiculous," she told WBZ.
"They knocked down my fence. The retaining wall is obviously going to be messed up. There are boulders of ice and tons, I mean tons, of snow, like my backyard was a dumping ground."
The Mayor's Office said anyone who has property damaged during the snow removal should file a claim with the city clerk's office.
Scott says the city of Boston and Mayor's Office have been no help.
"I called the mayor's hotline. The mayor's hotline told me to call the county clerk's office. I called the county clerk's office and they told me to call my insurance company," she said.
The snow in Scott's yard came from an adjacent side street, Creston Park, where there are several huge piles of trash.
"It's been a big mess. We tried to call the trash company to come pick up our trash. It has been about a month," said Ricky Dilworth, who lives on Creston Park.
"It's disgusting. It's horrible and it's not sanitary."
He said the trash is now attracting rats, raccoons and possums.
"I caught two raccoons on my porch just sitting there eating my trash," Dilworth told WBZ.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the piles of trash had been picked up by sanitation crews.
WBZ contacted the mayor's office Wednesday. They said they are checking on the issues.
