Dorchester Grandmother Killed By Stray Bullet While Sitting On Porch Identified As Delois Brown
BOSTON (CBS) — Boston Police identified the Dorchester grandmother who was killed by a stray bullet while sitting on her front porch as 73-year-old Delois Brown. She was not the intended target, her daughter Shirley Brown told WBZ-TV.
"It was scary. It was really scary. My mother got shot and killed right in front of my eyes. And in front of her two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter," said Shirley.
Brown was struck on Olney Street at about 6 p.m. Saturday. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
"The kids were playing and he just walked up and started shooting," Shirley said. "My mother stood up and when she stood up she got hit."
On Sunday, dozens gathered on the same porch where Brown was killed to offer prayers and honor her.
"She was loved. She was everybody's nana, ge-ge, mom, grandma. if she saw you hungry she would feed you," said Shirley. "Everybody loved her. Everybody appreciated her. And now she's gone. It's just not right."
Shirley hopes the shooter will turn themselves in.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover funeral expenses.
No arrests have been made.
"It's absurd that a grandmother can't sit on her porch on a beautiful spring day without the worry of gunfire," Acting Boston Mayor Kim Janey said on Saturday while visiting the scene of the crime. "Emotions are very high here. A lot of the neighbors are still out. They're very traumatized."
The death was the city's 10th homicide of the year.
