4 Injured After Shootings In Dorchester, Yards Away From Children
BOSTON (CBS) – "This is always a challenging night, July Fourth, but we shouldn't be having guys pulling out guns when we've got young kids steps away, enjoying July Fourth," said Boston Police Commissioner William Evans at the scene of a shooting Wednesday evening.
Four people were injured, one critically, after two shootings just a few blocks apart in Dorchester.
The Commissioner left the Fourth of July festivities on the Esplanade to come to the scene on Fayston Street. He expressed anger that a shooting erupted between grownups arguing at a party when a bouncy house was about 20 yards away.
"What's real frustrating to me, and annoying, is we had close-by one of those bouncy things where we probably had 25 kids jumping up and down, having a good time. We're just fortunate we didn't have a young kid hit by crossfire," said Evans.
"If that's not a wakeup call as we proceed through the summer, I don't know what is," he added.
At the first scene on Fayson Street (near the bouncy house), police said two people shot and suffered non-life threatening injuries. The second shooting occurred on Maywood Street. Frome there, one person was taken to Boston Medical Center in critical condition.
According to Evans, the men injured varied in age from 22 to their late 40s.
Shell cases from three different weapons have been found.
No arrests have been made and witnesses have not been coming forward.
"Obviously, there was a lot of people here, not as much cooperation as we would like, that the frustrating part," said Evans.
Anyone with information is asked to call police or use their anonymous tip line.
"Words were exchanged and obviously, instead of fighting with their hands, they pulled out guns and there was an exchange of gunfire," said Evans. "Unfortunately, nobody fights anymore with their hands, everybody has a gun."
The shooting in Dorchester were not the only ones in Boston on Wednesday night. Another shooting on Brookford Street in Roxbury left a man with life-threatening injuries.
