Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton Face Crucial Week In New Hampshire, Analysts Say
BOSTON (CBS) – The New Hampshire presidential primary is exactly one week away.
So what can we expect to see in the next seven days?
WBZ NewsRadio 1030's political analysts, Democrat Mary Anne Marsh and Republican Gene Hartigan, say it will be a crucial stretch for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
Hartigan on Trump:
"People can read the numbers and the numbers say he didn't do as well as he told everyone he was going to do (in Iowa) and now he's going to have to get a big win out of New Hampshire. If he doesn't do that, then he's in trouble."
Marsh on Clinton:
"It is Groundhog Day for her. Eight years later she's back in New Hampshire with a huge hill to climb in front of her. We'll see if she gets the kind of bounce you would normally get out of Iowa as a winner. Maybe a little tough given how slim that win is and can she cut into the huge lead that Bernie Sanders has?"
Hartigan:
"Republicans, be careful what you wish for. What you want to have is a wounded Hillary Clinton moving forward. You do not want to have a situation where she continues to lose and Bernie Sanders continues to win and gain momentum and some on the sideline (Michael Bloomberg) start looking at jumping into this race."
Marsh:
"For the Clinton people, again, to go 0-and-2, I don't care what anyone said, that would have been unchartered territory going into Nevada after New Hampshire. Hillary Clinton again, staring at the barrel of New Hampshire, which has bedeviled her time and time again and can she replicate what she did 8 years ago? A tall, tall, order. I think what we're all looking at right now is a much longer primary process than anybody thought, on both sides."
Hartigan:
"You have to look at March. Mid-March is when the first big, winner-take-all states come in, like Ohio and Illinois and Florida. Between now and then, gosh, this is a strange year. Who knows what's going to happen?
Marsh:
"The one thing we do know is what the calendar looks like and after the first four contests, every single one of them in February, you're going to have a pretty good idea of who's going to nail the March primaries. On the Democratic side, the two things to look for this week are two debates in New Hampshire and now they're one-on-one debates between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders and that's going to be must-see-TV."
