Jeb Bush Says Trump Is "Not A Serious Candidate"
BOSTON (CBS) - Does Donald Trump have an ulterior motive for running for president? Some of his critics are saying so and during an interview with WBZ Friday, Jeb Bush was leading the charge.
It's a theme Bush has been pushing for days and during his interview with Jon Keller, Bush doubled down on his claim that Trump is a sort of political Trojan horse, disrupting the GOP race with the goal of electing Hillary Clinton.
"I don't know how else to describe it," Bush said. "He's motivated for some reason, but he's not motivated to win the presidency."
"He would make it impossible for a republican to win if he continues down this path," Bush said. "Look, he's not a serious person, he's not a serious candidate. We're living in serious times and his proposals are completely unserious."
Proponents of this theory note that Trump has been a Clinton donor, that Bill and Hillary attended Trump's 2005 wedding, that Trump's daughter Ivanka is pals with Chelsea Clinton.
"People have kind of forgotten that he was a democrat not so long ago, that he supported Hillary Clinton," Bush said, "that he thought Hillary Clinton would be a good negotiator with Iran. That turned out to be great, wasn't it?"
"Whether it's motivated by him or not, his winning the republican nomination would guarantee that Hillary Clinton would be elected president," Bush said.
Bush's frustration with Trump's rise is palpable, and understandable. There's some truth in his claim that Trump's proposals are as much hot air as fresh air.
But Keller says, "repeatedly floating an unsubstantiated theory about a Trump-Clinton conspiracy - without a shred of real evidence attached to it - just doesn't pass the truth test."
