Keller @ Large: Trump-Sanders And Other Fantasy Debates
BOSTON (CBS) - So Donald Trump says he'll debate Bernie Sanders if someone will donate $10 or $15 million to charity?
I applaud this idea, but color me skeptical. Just because something comes out of Donald Trump's mouth doesn't make it true or for real.
While Trump may enjoy trolling Hillary Clinton by giving her opponent priceless free publicity, he has also made it clear he prefers to run against her, and it may quickly dawn on him that he is spiting himself with this latest stunt.
Plus, while Sanders is not the greatest debater I've ever seen, you will recall that Trump ended the GOP debates when the field dwindled down to just three. For all his bravado about winning the Republican debates, it seems he felt he needed the crowd onstage to give him cover, lest he risk exposure of his shallow knowledge.
So while the Trump-Sanders debate will likely never occur, we can certainly speculate about other appealing matchups that might have a better chance of happening.
Remember the famous tennis match between sexist loudmouth Bobby Riggs and women's champion Billie Jean King? I'd pony up the pay-per-view fee to watch King debate Trump, although she might well mop up the floor with him the way she did with Riggs.
How about Al Gore vs. Ross Perot debating the proposed NAFTA trade deal back in the '90s? It would be amusing to watch Gore take on Trump and Perot face off with Hillary Clinton. A doubleheader! Great fun.
Then again, we don't have to wait or pay extra for the best debate of this early campaign season.
Just sit back and watch Trump, the king of evolving positions, debate himself.
