Dog Leads Sudbury Family To Fellow Pup Trapped In Mud

SUDBURY (CBS) - A local family is crediting one of their dogs with saving the other one's life.

The Boland family says their two dogs are practically inseparable.

So when their Yellow Lab, Sophie, showed up at their back steps without their Black Lab, Riley, they assumed something was wrong.

"I wasn't sure. Usually they're joined at the hip," Chris Boland told WBZ-TV.

Riley had gotten stuck in the swampy mud – nearly a mile away from home.

Unsure of what else to do, Alison Boland asked Sophie to lead the way.

WBZ-TV's Ken Macleod reports

"Sometimes when we're missing something, we'll say 'find it', she'll find the ball or something," Alison said. "I said 'put the leash on her and say find it' and see if she goes. We have nothing to lose."

Sophie led them through woods and briers for nearly a mile until the family spotted Riley.

Nephew Garrett Reid waded into the muck and after an hour long struggle, was able to pull Riley out. Riley is home and doing well.

"She just went straight back to where Riley was," Chris said with some surprise in his voice, noting that the whole thing reminded him of an episode of Lassie.
