Dog Rescued From Icy Ashland Pond
ASHLAND (CBS) -- A dog was rescued from freezing waters Tuesday afternoon after she fell through ice at Ashland State Park and became trapped. The dog's owner, Corey Spaulding, called 911 around 3:15 p.m. after attempting to go into the water after her pet.
"She walked a little too far out and the ice cracked and she went in," Spaulding said.
Spaulding was up to her neck when she realized she'd never reach Blue and was climbing back on shore as rescuers arrived.
"She made mention that she was going to try to self rescue, which we don't recommend," Fire Chief Keith Robie said.
"I wouldn't advise it but your rational mind is fighting the irrational," Spaulding said.
In a survival suit, Firefighter Doug Dow quickly carved a path to the exhausted pet. "As soon as I broke that ice he swam to shore," Dow said. "He was on shore long before I was."
Spaulding won't ever forget how rescuers went all out for Blue.
"They're just all so very dedicated, they just all cared very much about the dog," Spaulding said. "So incredibly thankful and grateful."
Spaulding was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Blue was put in a police cruiser to warm up.
