Dodgers Claim Adrian Gonzalez On Waivers
BOSTON (CBS) -- The reported interest from the Los Angeles Dodgers in Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez turned out to be true, as L.A. claimed Gonzalez on waivers on Friday afternoon.
The news was first reported by Bill Shaikin of The Los Angeles Times, and it was later confirmed by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
With Gonzalez being claimed, the Red Sox have three options. They can negotiate a trade with the Dodgers, though any player involved would have to clear waivers. The Red Sox could also let Gonzalez go, putting the Dodgers on the hook for his remaining six-plus years and roughly $130 million remaining on his contract. The last -- and more likely -- option for the Red Sox is to take Gonzalez off waivers and keep him in Boston.
What the waiver claim does do is open the door for potential negotiations in the offseason, with the Dodgers now publicly announcing they're willing to add a major contract like Gonzalez's.
"I can't worry about things I can't control," Gonzalez told ESPN Deportes this week. "Nobody has told me that I'm on waivers and if that's true, does not mean they will trade me. I can't control any of that."
