Doc Rivers Talks Shaq, Perkins

BOSTON (CBS) - Celtics Coach Doc Rivers did not have good news when it came to Center Shaquille O'Neal.

"Probably will not play tomorrow, and maybe on the West coast trip," Rivers told the large gathering of media Monday afternoon. "He might miss that trip. We don't know yet."

Shaq injured his hip in Friday night's 110-86 win over the Utah Jazz. It was thought he would only miss a game or two, but it seems like the Celtics will make sure the big man does not rush back.

The Celtics would love to have Shaq back for their NBA Finals rematch with the Los Angeles Lakers on January 30th. They are already thin at Center with Jermaine O'Neal rehabbing his injured right leg.

There was some good news about Center Kendrick Perkins though.

"He looks great. He went through the entire practice, since we needed him," Rivers joked.

There is no date for Perkins return, but it will not be long until last season's starting-five is reunited at last.

"I think if he could make it, he'd play tomorrow," Rivers said. "But I think they want to wait until we get back from the West coast trip."

Injured since Game Six of last season's NBA Finals, a possible return date is February 4th when the Dallas Mavericks come to town. Perkins practiced with the second-unit Monday afternoon.

The reason Perkins did not practice with the starters is because that spot was for rookie Semih Erden, who will get the nod Tuesday against the Cavaliers. It will be Erden's sixth start at center this season.

Guard Marquis Daniels also missed practice Monday for a family matter. It is unsure if he will be available Tuesday night.
