Discarded Pressure Cooker Shuts Down Kenmore Square
BOSTON (CBS) -- Police say a discarded pressure cooker is to blame for a scare in Kenmore Square Thursday.
Officers were called in for a suspicious device in the Muddy River under the Bowker Overpass around 11:30 a.m.
As a precaution, authorities shut down the overpass and parts of Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon Street at Charlesgate Street as the bomb squad took a look at it.
The device was blown up as a precaution. State Police said it did not contain explosives and was not a "hoax device."
The roads were opened a short time later.
Troopers from the state fire marshal's office took the remains to the crime lab where it will be analyzed further.
"We are thinking it was a just a discarded pressure cooker in an area known to be frequented by homeless persons," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in an email to WBZ-TV.
No one was hurt.
Two pressure cooker bombs placed near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killed three and injured hundreds of people in April.
