Detectives Hurt In NH Shootout Are Part Of Drug Task Force
GREENLAND, N.H. (CBS/AP) - A hospital official says two New Hampshire police detectives who suffered gunshot wounds to the chest in the same shootout that killed Greenland, New Hampshire's police chief are in stable condition and are expected to survive.
Chief Michael Maloney was killed and the four detectives from surrounding departments were injured. Greenland's entire police department consisted of just seven officers.
Detective Scott Kukesh, 33, a 10-year veteran of the Newmarket police department, Detective Jeremiah Murphy, 34, a seven-year veteran of the Rochester police department, were both in intensive care. Each had undergone surgery for a gunshot wound to the chest.
Dr. Timothy Pike, chief medical officer at Portsmouth Hospital, said Friday afternoon the officers were comfortable and with their families.
The Associated Press was reporting that both were wearing bulletproof vests when they were shot.
The two other officers who were shot, Detective Gregory Turner, 32, a six-year veteran of the Dover police department, who was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder and Detective Eric Kulberg, 31, a seven-year veteran of the University of New Hampshire police department, who was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm, have both been released from the hospital.
The injured detectives were all part of a state-run drug task force.
"The four injured police officers from the four police departments in NH were all assigned as members of the Attorney General's drug task force and they were acting in that capacity," AG Michael Delaney said on Friday.
