7 Democrats Vie For Open Mass. Senate Seat
BOSTON (AP) — Seven Democrats are vying for an open state Senate seat.
A primary will be held on Tuesday in the First Suffolk and Middlesex District, which includes several Boston neighborhoods along with Winthrop, Revere and a portion of Cambridge.
The Democratic candidates are Winthrop Housing Authority member Joseph Boncore; Boston attorney Lydia Marie Edwards; Diana Hwang, founder of the Asian-American Women's Political Initiative; Boston state Representative Jay Livingstone; Revere City Councilor Steven Morabito; former Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo; and Paul Rogers, a Boston resident.
There are no Republicans on Tuesday's primary ballot, so the winner of the Democratic primary is virtually assured of taking the seat formerly held by Anthony Petruccelli of East Boston in the May 10 special election.
Petruccelli resigned in December to join a Boston lobbying firm.
