DEFEND YOUR RIDE: Hilary At Nahant Beach

Q: Hi Hilary. Looks like you're driving a vintage BMW. What can you tell us about it?

A: It's a 1989 325i BMW. My father calls it the urban assault vehicle because it doesn't really matter if it gets dented or dinged. It is very small, so I can park in smaller spots. It's a stick shift, so I can control the acceleration better. It's got a lot of pick up and it gets really good gas mileage, about 25 miles per gallon. The car also has no blind spots because the frame is not very wide and the driver sits above the trunk.

Q: Sounds pretty ideal. What made you buy it?

A: Five years ago, my Saab broke. My parents loaned the car to me while I was shopping for a new car. I really liked it, so I made them an offer and they sold it to me for a very reasonable price.

Q: What do you like about the car?

A: It's quirky and classic all in one. The shape is fantastic - It's boxy, but yet it's got a smooth shape to it. Plus, it's small and speedy. But I really love that it has no blind spots.

Q: What is your main use for your car?

A: Commuting, running errands and driving to the beach. I love to surf, so I put a surf rack on it. It's perfect for surfing because it is low to the ground. I can get my board on and off really easily. Plus, since my car is kind of old, it doesn't really matter if I get sand in the car. I love the beach. It's just a nice, beautiful, peaceful place to be.

Q: Do you ever wish you drove a newer car?

A: I would rather drive an older car that has a little bit of style than a newer car that doesn't. I drive this car because it is relatively inexpensive, extremely safe and I don't care if it gets dented. Every time I come back to my car in Boston, it has a new dent.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to share with us today?

A: Yes! I was t-boned and had to get a completely new door. I've also replaced the windows, the exhaust system, the shocks and struts, got a new steering rack, and a new cooling system. But, I only paid maybe $1,200 to my parents for this car. I've put in maybe another $8,000 over the last five years! It is still cheaper than any new or used car I would get. It's incremental.
